As Above...So Below Live is a live performance of the debut audiovisual album from Montreal-based artist ensemble Dark Sky Society. Dark Sky Society’s sprawling, nebulous large-ensemble draws from its membership of mind-bending musicians and filmmakers and is fully rooted in its iconic and adventurous Montreal artistic heritage.
Beginning in 2018 with a pile of entangled compositional threads, over a period of six years William Hesselink and Vid Cousins enlisted collaborators inside and outside the studio to develop and refine their statements and process. As talented friends from their years of work in the city’s avant-rock, jazz and film circles were brought on board to flesh out ideas and themes, As Above...So Below was born: a monumental debut audiovisual work expressed from a single 55-minute compositional double helix through a network of percussion, guitar, piano, harp, marimba, contrabass, vibraphone, pedal-steel, synths, brass and woodwinds.
Led by Vid Cousins and William Hesselink, Dark Sky Society brings together 14 musicians and 5 filmmakers, forming a collaborative structure that reflects Montreal’s deeply interconnected creative community.
